Krenek, Gál & Penderecki: Serenade for Clarinet & Strings
Ernst Krenek, Hans Gál, Krzysztof Penderecki • Kilian Herold (clarinet); Florian Donderer (violin); Barbara Buntrock (viola); Tanja Tetzlaff (cello)
About this release
The label presents this programme of three contrasting serenades: Krenek’s youthful Serenade Op.4, Hans Gál’s mellow Serenade for Clarinet, Violin & Cello Op.93 and Penderecki’s sinewy Quartet for Clarinet & String Trio. Avi‑Music highlights the music’s lyricism and colour and notes that clarinettist Kilian Herold is joined by members of the Signum Quartet to create a dialogue among equal voices.

Land of Lost Content (MusicWeb International blog) — “Serenade: Chamber Music by Krenek, Gál and Penderecki”
Reviewer: John France · Publication date: 2024 · Rating / distinction: Positive review · Format note: Full review (blog)
The reviewer notes that Gál’s Serenade Op.93 is “relaxed in mood, pastoral in its opening, with a lively scherzo and a humorous finale,” adding that the performers capture the piece’s “lyrical and restrained character”.
France provides an overview of each work, praising the ensemble’s dialogue and tone. He singles out clarinettist Kilian Herold for his expressive playing and commends the recording and booklet. He concludes that the disc offers an excellent opportunity to hear three neglected serenades and is highly recommended.
